Market Day Salad

This subject that doesn't go with a food blog but I was thinking about bins and rubbish... It's very interesting. It's not that I am scrutinising everyone's bin every time I go out of my door. It's just that I have a lot of opportunities to observe other people's bins because I live on a narrow cul-de-sac and when I go out with my car I have to wait behind a bin truck until it goes out of our street in the morning. I curse myself when this happens but I never toot. Binmen are clearing our rubbish, not theirs, and they are doing their best not to obstruct other cars.

I sometimes feel sorry for them. Some contents fall out from jam-packed bags or some bags burst open when they are carrying them to the truck. Then they have to pick up the bits from the ground. Sometimes a lot of liquid is dribbling from the bags. You could argue that it's their job, but is it? People don't have to make other people's difficult or unpleasant jobs worse than they are. Just a little care and attention to everything makes a difference.

Another thing about bins is that you can tell people's lifestyle by looking at their bins. Some people's bins are full of cartons and containers of ready-made or takeaway food. They are too busy to cook. Some people put a huge amount of alcohol bottles and cans in the bin. It might be a good idea for them to reduce the regular intake. Some bags are not properly tied up at the top or left wide open. Their life would be full of loose-ends, I guess. Other bags are leaking. These people probably don't notice or care about anything in life.

My bins? I do commit a bin crime, too. I don't recycle. Here are the excuses - we are just two of us, living in two rooms. The amount of rubbish is small, and I can't afford any space to keep various types of bins because I run business from home. I occasionally sneak some of my empty wine bottles into my neighbours' recycling bins out of my guilty conscience... What can you tell me about my lifestyle? I'm poor and selfish...

There's no recipe today. When I go to a farmers' market I buy this interesting mixture of salad leaves - some purple and some red. I then fry chopped up bacon bits, sprinkle them on top the salad, and eat with greasy bacon fat dressing. White plastic bag in the picture below has a lovely ball of buffalo mozzarella and the plastic container (oops...) has some hand-made beetroot ravioli. I'll tell you about it next time :)
